Schwinn 460 Elliptical Trainer Review

Machine: Schwinn 460 Elliptical Trainer

Overview: The Schwinn 460 elliptical features the unique Schwinn® V-Stride™ technology that allows you to change stride lengths without manual adjustments or machine modifications. This feature can be broken down by explaining the following beneficial effects: A short stride targets calves and quads; a medium stride works your thighs and glutes; and a long stride engages all muscle groups. This also makes the Schwinn 460 appealing to a household that has more than one person using the machine – as these wide varying stride lengths will easily adjust to people of different height without missing a beat. Unlike traditional elliptical trainers, the handlebars are locked into the footplates and work in tandem with the pedaling motion. So the upper body workout is not independent of the leg workout. Its independent footplates let users target core muscles while engaging both sides of the body, while Biofit footpads and handlebars provide superb comfort. Additional features of the Schwinn 460 Variable Stride Elliptical include a brilliantly backlit touch screen, 16 workout programs with pop-up instructional messages to keep you motivated, a large water bottle holder and a fan.

Strengths:
The Schwinn 460 trainer is a sturdy, well-built machine. While heart rate monitors are a standard feature, the 460 also includes a chest strap with telemetry, so that you can continue to use the moveable handlebars and still monitor your heart rate. It may take some getting used to, but the Schwinn 460's variable stride technology is definitely a plus. It makes it comfortable for several users and simpler to target specific areas of the body. The oversized water bottle holder, fan and generous reading platform make for an enjoyable experience. The Schwinn 460 will keep track of two individual's workout history and has enough workout programs and resistance levels to keep things interesting.
Weaknesses:
Because everything is a matter of personal preference, we should mention that this variable stride means that the Schwinn 460 elliptical does not have a fixed stride. The stride lengthens with the amount of effort your exert - which may seem awkward at first and to new users. You can slide your feet back and forwards without involving the flywheel and without getting any resistance. This is a taller machine, so if you have low ceilings or plan on using it in a basement, be sure to take measurements prior to purchasing. The Schwinn 460 doesn't have speakers or sound technology - which is only an issue if you have no other source of music entertainment.
The Skinny:
The Schwinn 460's use of Variable stride technology involves changing the length of stride based upon the pressure that you exert on the pedals. While this is certainly something that will take some time getting used to, if you're looking for a more versatile elliptical trainer that has a wider range of strides, look no further than the Schwinn 460. Out of the box, this piece of equipment can accommodate a wider range of users with regard to height, stride, leg length and fitness levels, making it a fitness club quality machine at a home elliptical trainer size and price.
