Schwinn Elliptical 431 Review
Machine: Schwinn 431 Elliptical Trainer
Overview: The Schwinn 431 elliptical trainer is an upgrade to the popular Schwinn 430 (use our link) model. Both ellipticals appear to be exact and feature the same resistance levels. Of course, there are several differences that justify the $200-$300 price jump. They include 19 workout programs rather than 8, a selection of exercise routines that control the resistance based on your heart rate, an improved backlit LCD display, a fan, and a place to keep an MP3 player in the console. The Schwinn 431 Elliptical has a 6 month service warranty, in comparison to 90-days on the Schwinn elliptical 430. Other notable features include: Schwinn BioFit console design with an on-console towel hook, a fan, oversized cushioned footplates; Eddy Current magnetic brake resistance system(that makes the Schwinn elliptical 431 a smooth and quiet machine); and an oversized bottle holder that fits most beverage containers and can be removed and cleaned separately.

The Schwinn elliptical 431 is smooth, quiet, sturdy, and well built. The extra features that outweigh its predecessor are worth the price if money isn't tight. The Schwinn BioFit console is designed to enhance your workout..and for the most part (see weaknesses), the integrated MP3/portable media compartment, an on-console towel hook, a fan and an oversized cushioned foot plate do just that. The 25-lb flywheel is the largest you will find on any machine in its price class.
The jury is out and it appears that most users agree- the fan is pretty much useless. There have been some reports of squeaks and wobbles here and there, but they all appear to be a result of faulty construction on the owner's part. The 18" stride on the Schwinn 431 elliptical may not be sufficient for taller users (over 5'8"), or those who are used to a 20" stride from fitness center models.
For under $1000, this is definitely a best buy. Its reviews are overwhelmingly positive and contain only minor complaints. The Schwinn 431 elliptical trainer offers the same stability and smoothness as the 430 model, but boasts more features for those looking for more than a basic elliptical. Its sturdy frame makes it ideal for heavier individuals looking for a solid elliptical trainer- though if you're big and tall you might want to upgrade to a model with a longer stride length. Overall, the Schwinn elliptical 431 is an excellent machine that stands at the top of its price class.
